Las Vegas watering rules right now
The schedule changes on September 1. Through August 31 sprinkler watering is banned 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and prohibited on Sundays. From September 1 to October 31 irrigation drops to three assigned days a week, and from November 1 to one day a week.
Assigned watering groups are mandatory for every municipal water customer. Running sprinklers outside your assigned days is water waste and can bring a fee or a citation.

The mandatory seasonal calendar, in full
Southern Nevada does not run one schedule all year. It runs four, and each change is a date on which a compliant controller becomes a non-compliant one overnight.

Sunday is closed in every season. That is the one rule that never moves, and it is the one most often broken by a controller that was set once and forgotten.
Your assigned days come from your watering group, which SNWA assigns and publishes. The group is not something you choose, and your neighbour’s group is not necessarily yours — look yours up before programming anything.
The change most people miss
Summer is the loosest part of the Las Vegas year, not the strictest. From May through August there is no assigned-day limit on sprinklers at all — only the midday ban and the Sunday closure. Then on September 1 the assigned-day rule arrives and irrigation is cut to three days.
So a controller that has been running five or six days a week perfectly legally through the summer becomes a water-waste violation on the first of September, without anyone touching it. The same thing happens again on November 1, when three days becomes one.

What stays legal outside your assigned days
Three exceptions are published, and they are narrower than people assume:
- Hand watering. A held hose is not sprinkler irrigation.
- Supervised sprinkler system testing. Supervised is the operative word — you have to be standing there.
- Watering new or reseeded landscapes. Water agencies have special requirements to obtain this exemption and must be contacted to receive it. It is not automatic because the sod is new; contact your water utility for the terms.
Note what is not on that list: drip irrigation is not exempted from the assigned-day rule by these exceptions. SNWA’s own guidance is that running drip too many days a week is the single biggest mistake homeowners here make.
The 12-minute method, which is a real published figure
Desert soil in the Las Vegas valley is parched enough that water runs off before it soaks in. SNWA’s answer is not to water longer, it is to water in cycles.
For each assigned watering day, run the lawn three times for four minutes each — twelve minutes total — with start times at least one hour apart. In warm weather run the cycles before sunrise.
That is a specific, checkable instruction, and it is the difference between twelve minutes that reaches the roots and twelve minutes that reaches the gutter. SNWA structures the controller around it with three programs: Program A for lawn sprinklers, Program B for high-water-use plants on drip, Program C for water-efficient plants on drip. Three programs, because those three things must never share a schedule.
If plants look stressed, check the soil before adding water. If the soil is wet the plants are likely over-watered; if it is dry, check that the emitters are working. SNWA recommends flushing drip lines and filters every time you change the irrigation season — which is four times a year on the calendar above.
Why outdoor water is treated differently in Southern Nevada
This is the part that explains every rule above, and almost no local page carries it.
Nearly all the water used indoors in Southern Nevada is recycled and earns return-flow credits against the Colorado River allocation. Water used outdoors evaporates. It cannot be recycled, earns no credit, and is counted against the allowance. SNWA calls it consumptive use.
Approximately 60 percent of Southern Nevada’s water is used outdoors. That single figure is why the conservation programmes, the rebates and the assigned-day rules all point at landscapes rather than at showers: an indoor gallon largely comes back, an outdoor gallon does not.
It is also why the turf conversion rebate is as generous as it is. Removing grass is the only permanent reduction in consumptive use available to a homeowner, which is why it is worth $7 per square foot here once the Las Vegas Valley Water District’s $2 is added to SNWA’s $5. The 2027 law, and who it does not apply to
Nevada’s 2021 law prohibits the use of Colorado River water to irrigate nonfunctional grass on properties not zoned exclusively for single-family residences, from January 1, 2027. It applies to commercial, multi-family, government and HOA-managed property.
It does not apply to single-family homes. SNWA is explicit that grass in the front or back yard of a house is outside the law. If you own a house in Las Vegas, nobody is going to make you remove your lawn. If you manage a commercial or multi-family property, or an HOA common area, the 2027 date is yours and the clock is short.
